This is a great article, I always saw my 'thriftiness' as a way of keeping costs and consumption down but now I can really see how it is actually a part of a much bigger community. Charity shops and sites like freecycle.org are just the tip of the ice berg it would seem! Collaborative consumption of household items is very interesting, I am not sure how it could work in a suburban street like mine but I love the idea of a virtual shed where we all have a key, and finally share a cup of tea with a neighbour.

My name is Ginny Dale and i just wanted to leave a little comment on the Transition Rutland blog to express my delight at your missions! Being a small producer, i couldnt be more grateful to you for helping to raise awareness about the 'little guys' - the small producers that seek to provide their local community with premium goods.

What my family does is make craft cider - this is hard but gratifying work. Craft cider producers have only one chance a year to make cider, and therefore only one chance to get it right. We have been practicing for 9 years at our family home and last year we took the big step into commercial production. This was quite a large leap and we welcomed the challenge of getting the Jollydale name out there. What we have found, however, is that despite being amongst the very few cider producers in the area, landlords and their customers are more inclined to 'stick with what they know'. This is what needs to change and this is one of Transition Rutland's greatest strengths in my eyes.

We want everyone to know that Jollydale is the local cider...today, more than ever it is time to support the small producer - be it a farmer, a baker or a cider maker! This, as the Transition Rutland vision has outlined, will help the local economy and build local capabilities. We hope to keep providing more and more people with our craft cider and with the help of initiatives like Transition Rutland, there should hopefully be more demand for local produce in the future.

Please keep up the good work and i am very happy to be a part of such a passionate initiative.

Best regards,

Ginny Dale
